Which Lyft Has Car Seats? The Truth About Car Seats and Lyft
If you use any type of ride-sharing company such as Uber or Lyft, you’ve likely used it just for yourself, but what if you want to take along one of your kids or even a toddler? To make sure they’re as safe as possible, do these companies offer the option of car seats so that your kids aren’t in any danger as you ride? Fortunately, the answer to that question is “yes;” however, that does not mean this option is available all the time. We discuss which Lyft has car seats in today’s article.
Lyft and Children’s Car Seats
Indeed, if you are going somewhere with a small child and need a car seat, you essentially have two options. The first is to bring your own car seat, which any ride-share driver will let you do, and they’ll even make sure the seat is secured properly before starting the trip. The second option is for the ride-share driver to have his or her own car seat available, but this is extremely rare. In fact, as of this writing, very few of these drivers have car seats readily available. Regarding which Lyft has car seats, the service is limited to New York City at the moment, although by the time you read this, other cities may have been added.
In the city or cities where the service is available, Lyft usually charges around $8 for it, and the fee is simply added onto your regular fare. If you log onto the Lyft app to request a ride somewhere and this service is available in your area, you will see it on the app itself. You simply have to click on that option and continue as usual. In these cases, the car seat option works just like the many other options that Lyft has available, such as the Line option when you’re requesting a shared ride, the Plus option for those times when you need a larger vehicle, and the Lux option when you need a top-of-the-line black car.
You’ll see all of your options come up when you log onto your Lyft app, and you can click on as many of these options as you need to. For the cities where the car seat option is available, it is usually a forward-facing car seat that accommodates children 31 to 52 inches long and weighs 22 to 48 pounds. This means that if your child is under 12 months old, the car seat will not be available to you. Furthermore, the car seat that Lyft uses is the IMMI Go car seat, which is a very highly rated car seat whose safety you won’t have to worry about. This alone should bring you some peace of mind when choosing the Lyft car seat option.
What Do You Have to Do?
Once you click on the car seat option on your Lyft app, the driver will arrive with the IMMI Go car seat already installed and ready to go. There’s no need to worry because all Lyft drivers who include a car seat in their vehicle have been trained and tested to make sure they install and maintain the seat properly. This means you do nothing extra or special to make sure that the car seat is safe and installed correctly. The drivers know everything about making sure the seat will take perfect care of your child during the entire ride.
One thing you should remember, however, is that you will have to put your own child into the car seat and make sure he or she is buckled up properly before the Lyft driver takes off. The driver isn’t the one with this responsibility, and you need to make double-sure that the car seat is installed properly before you buckle your child inside of it.
The Lyft Company hires third-party child passenger safety (CPS) technicians who are certified by the National Child Passenger Safety Training Program to test each Lyft driver to make sure all of them can properly install the IMMI Go car seat into their vehicles. The drivers also have to make sure the car seat is always working properly and is in excellent condition.
Of course, if you live in an area where Lyft drivers do not have car seats already available – and that means almost everyone – you still have an option when it comes to traveling with your child and making sure he or she is safe, and that is to bring your own car seat. If you have a car seat you’d like to take with you on the ride, you can feel free to do so. The driver will be able to help you get the seat secured properly so you can place your child in it. If you choose this option, you won’t be responsible for the $8 fee.
You should, however, make double-sure the seat is installed correctly and the child is strapped in properly as well. Ultimately, it is your responsibility to make sure the child is safe, although the driver assumes part of that responsibility, too. Both of you need to make sure the child is completely safe before the vehicle takes off.
One more thing is worth mentioning, and that is the fact that other ride-share companies, including Uber, have similar options when it comes to child safety car seats. Regardless of which company you choose, you’ll know immediately which option is available to you as soon as you log onto their app to schedule your ride.
Riding with Lyft when you’re traveling with a toddler is a bit complex since most of the drivers do not offer a car seat option, but you are still free to bring your own car seat if you like. For riders in New York City, you still don’t have this option for babies under one year of age, but many of their drivers will still have a seat available for toddlers. It’s always a good idea to check your app to make sure which of Lyft’s many services are available to you because this way, you’ll be prepared for what you might have to do to accommodate the trip.
